7Z is an open-source archive format introduced with the 7-Zip archiver in 1999. 7Z uses the LZMA/LZMA2 compression algorithm, which provides significantly better compression ratios than ZIP or RAR — often 30-70% smaller archives for text and binary data. The format supports AES-256 encryption, solid compression, multi-threading, and file sizes up to 16 exabytes. 7Z can also use other compression methods including DEFLATE, BZIP2, and PPMd.
